A downhill mountain bike race is never won as much as it is not lost. All the competitors try, strive, and at the end sometimes even cry, but no one will be able to go any faster than physically possible such that their hearts, lungs and limbs can propel them.

Not going off course, not being afraid of the speeds, not braking too much, not flatting. The race is an exercise in prevention.

The focus of the Breast Cancer Fund, too, is prevention.

Less than 10 percent of cases of Breast Cancer occur in women born with a genetic predisposition, and as many as half of all breast cancers occur in women who have no known risk factors for the disease. A substantial and growing body of evidence indicates that exposures to certain toxic chemicals and hormone-mimicking compounds contribute to the development of breast cancer.

So, the way to win the race against breast cancer is through prevention. I have been a part of LUNA's professional Women's Mountain Bike team for the last six years. Supporters often reveal how they have been personally touched by breast cancer and share their appreciation for LUNA's support of the cause. My LUNA teammates and I are proud to line up alongside the Breast Cancer Fund and join in their efforts to support women's health and increase awareness about the environmental causes of this disease.

My team and I focus on prevention on and off the course. Join me in educating our friends and families on the easy ways they can help reduce breast cancer.
